Welcome to the Emergency Care Foundation
To date there has been limited research undertaken into the many facets of emergency health care, leaving many important questions unanswered of both a medical and administrative nature. Unfortunately neither hospitals nor health boards fund this. The Emergency Care Foundation, set up in December 2003, primary focus is in Emergency Care.
The treatment a patient receives in the first few minutes often determines whether they live or die. The Emergency Care Foundation provides vital funding for research and equipment into improved accuracy and better decision making in emergency care. The Foundation relies on donations, grants and fund raising.
Our Mission Statement :
To help ensure that Emergency Care is the best it can possibly be.
News
This year has proved to be extremely difficult and our condolences go out to all our fellow Cantabrians who have been effected by any of our three earthquakes or subsequent aftershocks. The medical trustees of the charity played an enormous part on the day at the Emergency Department at Christchurch Hospital and worked tirelessly .The impact of the earthquakes on the health system was huge and will be important in planning future disaster responses.
As a result "The Rhise Group" has been established, which is an inclusive Canterbury-wide collaborative which aims to utilise and learn from these experiences. For more information please look at our current research topics.
Thanks
We have been extremely pleased with the continued support we have received both from both grants and our donors, especially in these current conditions. We have already been successful this year in receiving grants from The Canterbury Community Trust, Canterbury West Coast Emergency Care Co-ordination Team and Southern Trust. We would also like to extend our continued thanks to Lane Neave Lawyers who are our major sponsor.

It is not that the men of the Middle Ages who believed in unicorns
were less intelligent than we are; their intelligence was turned in a different direction...
Odell Shepard
It has always been the source of mystery and speculation. Chinese writings of the unicorn date back as far as 2800BC. The beast's horn was thought by medieval scholars to have magical healing properties and able to purify poisons and prevent disease. However strong beliefs of its existence held for thousands of years only started to crumble with the advent of scientific thought.
While the myth may have been put to rest the symbolism that surrounded this mighty creature lives on.
